SANDESTIN, Fla. - The 11th ranked NC Wesleyan Golf team finished in 7th place after all 54 holes of the prestigious Golfweek DIII Invitational at the Raven Golf Club in Sandestin, FL on Tuesday afternoon. The team improved by two places from 9th on Monday while also improving their score by 11 strokes as well.
Wesleyan shot a 287 on Tuesday led by sophomore Juan de Giacomi's -1 under par score of 70 in the third round to finish at a total score of 874 (+22), one stroke behind 6th place Guilford College and 13 behind Methodist University. Emory University (Ga.) won the tournament with a -10 under par 842.
De Giacomi finished in a tie for 10th place overall after his three day scores of 71, 71, and 70 equaled a 1 under par 212. Senior Grady Anderson, then came in right behind Juan in 14th overall out of 90 golfers with his scores of 69, 73, an d73 for a 1 over 214.
Junior Luke Thornton then placed next for the Bishops in 49th overall at 225 (+12) after his best round of the week on Tuesday when he posted a 73. He also shot 74 and 78 earlier in the week. Fellow Junior Mariano Silvestri then came next placing 53rd overall as he steadily improved his scores each day as well. Silvestri shot 78 in round one, 76 yesterday, and finally a 72 on Tuesday to finish at 226 for the week. Junior Nico Strafe also competed on the week shooting a 75 on Sunday, a 79 on Monday and an 81 on Tuesday to place 80th at 235.
The Bishops are next in action at Guilford College next week for their last tournament of the fall season. The O'Briant-Jensen Memorial Tournament takes place October 22-23 at Sedgfield Country Club-Dye course in Greensboro, NC.
