ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College men's basketball team swept both of their games over the weekend as they hosted the 31st annual Roger Taylor Invitational inside Everett Gym.
After the Southern Virginia Univ. men trounced Mid-Atlantic Christian (N.C.) 99-72 in the first game on Friday evening, the Bishops came on and overcome a first half deficit to defeat Newport News Apprentice School (Va.) 87-72 on Friday.
The Apprentice School then upended SVU (2-5) on Saturday afternoon in game one 80-68 before the Bishops rolled past the Mustangs of MACU 86-53 to improve to 5-1 on the year.
Making the all-tournament team were forwards Rob Wilson, A.J. Frye, and Ricardo Bullock of NC Wesleyan, guard Greg Bloodsworth of MACU, guard Alec Johnson of SVU, and forward Marion Moore of Apprentice.
In the first game against Apprentice (5-2) on Friday, Wilson led the Bishops with 24 points on 8 of 14 shooting along with 2 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block while Frye scored 18 points as a center with 8 rebounds and a block. Bullock then fell a rebound short of a double-double as he finished with 13 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 blocks for his season-high.
Sophomore guard Damon McDowell also finished with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Wesleyan trailed 25-10 early in the first half to Apprentice before rallying going on a 26-14 run before half to trail by three at the break. Wesleyan then rolled to a 51-33 second half romp to seal the 15-point win. The Bishops shot 40 percent in the first half and 62 percent in the second while holding the Builders to just 30 percent in the second half and 13 percent from three.
In Saturday's game, Wesleyan dominated from the start shooting 35 percent in the first half and holding the Mustangs to just 25 percent shooting and only one three to lead 36-21 at the break.
NCWC then kept piling it on in the second half shooting 57 percent and 55 percent from three while MACU (0-6) shot just 17 percent from three and 31 percent overall as the Bishops outscored the Mustangs 50-32 for the 33-point win.
Frye led the Bishops with 16 points along with 8 rebounds while Wilson tallied 14 points with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Bullock also tallied 6 points and led with 11 rebounds with 4 blocks, a steal and an assist.
Senior point guard Chris Braswell also led the team with 5 assists while adding 5 points, 4 rebounds, and a block. McDowell was also the third Bishop to finish in double-figure scoring with 12 points along with 7 rebounds, an assist and a team-best 3 steals. Senior Chris Sause also added 7 points, 3 rebounds, an assist and a steal in the win.
Wesleyan had 13 different players score points on the afternoon while they out-rebounded MACU 61-34.
The Bishops will next have a week off for exams before traveling to Berea College (5-2) in Kentucky on Dec. 8 at 2 PM to open up USA South play.
