ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Athletic Department recently announced their 2018-19 Athletes and Student-Athletes of the Year. Taking home Male Athlete of the Year was sophomore men's tennis player Roberto Puig while fellow women's tennis freshman Fariza Abdulloeva was chosen as Female Athlete of the Year.
Winning Male Student-Athlete of the Year was men's basketball senior Robert Wilson while Women's Student-Athlete of the Year went to volleyball senior Hannah Huls. These awards combine not only athletic achievement, but academic excellence and extracurricular work around campus.
Puig, a native of Malaga, Spain helped lead the Bishops to a school record of 22 wins along with an NCAA second round win and another regular season and conference tournament championship this past year. He won USA South Player of the Year as he played #1 and #2 singles and #1 doubles the majority of the season. He totaled 15 wins in singles and 15 more in doubles and won numerous Player of the Week awards in the conference as well. Puig was also a 2019 Academic All-Conference Team Member.
Abdulloeva, a native of Samarkland, Uzbekistan, then led the Lady Bishops to 16 wins and a second straight conference tournament and regular season championship by going undefeated through conference play. She was named Rookie of the Year in the conference and won numerous Player and Rookie of the Week awards in the conference as well. Abdulloeva went 17-4 as a #1 singles player during the year while finishing as the runner-up in the ITA Fall South Regional. She was also 18-5 in doubles and was named first team All-Conference and All-USA South Tournament team.
Wilson, a native of Chapel Hill, NC, helped lead the men's basketball team to an East Division Championship and a 12-5 conference record along with 19 overall wins as he averaged 15 points/game. He was also a second team All-Conference member this season, a one time Player of the Week, and is a 3X USA South Academic All-Conference member. He is a 2X NABC Honors Court Recipient, a 1x Team MVP, and a 2x Defensive Player of the Year. He majored in business and organizational administration and graduated this past May.
Huls helped lead the volleyball team to 10 wins this season playing as a defensive specialist with 31 aces and 276 digs and has received the Scholar Athlete Award for Volleyball twice. She also graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA in three years majoring in Accounting. She is from Collinsville, VA and was a 3x Academic All-Conference Team Member. Huls has also been awarded the John and Charles Wesley Heritage Scholarship, has been named to the President's Honor List every semester, received the Accounting Outstanding Student award, participated in WAAL for two years and has done over 20 hours of community service.
